Saigon and the Mekong Delta, Vietnam – a visit in 2009

Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City

March 16, 2009 Monday

We arrived in Ho Chi Minh late last night after some very long flights.  After about 30 minutes to get our entry visas, we were met by our guide Khoa, and our driver Doan.  It is always wonderful to see a friendly face holding a sign with your name when you arrive in a new country.

Although the official name of this city is Ho Chi Minh City, everyone still calls it Saigon, as I will.  For me, the name Saigon brings lots of memories of growing up during the Vietnam war.

Machu Picchu (from 2008)

Machu Picchu, Peru

For those of you who don’t have the time or desire to read this, the bottom line is put Machu Picchu on the top of your list of places to visit while you still have the energy and knees to be able to enjoy it.

Galápagos (from 2008)

January 12, 2008

Our trip to the Galapagos has begun. It was time to leave Guayaquil (please see that post). We woke up at the crack of dawn, suitcases outside the door by 7:00 – some to be taken to the ship, others held for the Peru leg of the trip (please see that post).  We had not met any of our fellow travelers, but headed down to breakfast.  In the elevator we met a nice couple from D.C. (Joanne and Frank), she an internist with a geriatric specialty (sound familiar?) and he an endocrinologist.  Seems there are quite a few doctors on this trip.  After breakfast it was off to the airport for the short, 1.5 hour flight to Baltra in the Galapagos.  We got to the landing to board the zodiacs for the ship, and found several sea lions sleeping on the deck.
